This post by @joyateverysize is absolutely spot on and something I talk about in clinic on the reg!! Binge eating is not the problem, it is the symptom. It is 9.9 times out of 10 a symptom of either restriction or shame.
Shame about the way you look, or what you may have eaten that wasn’t ‘on the plan’ or restricting certain foods or quantities of food is a sure fire way to set you up for a binge.
If you want to stop binge eating, you need to address the part of the cycle that leads to the binge. Trying to stop binge eating by creating more rules and restriction around food or following ‘fitspo’ accounts to give you inspiration for what you ‘think’ you should look like only sets you up to do the binge all over again.
This is something I LOVE working with in clinic so if you struggle with binge eating hit me up in my DMs 💛
I had the most beautiful weekend in sunny Nelson for some much needed family time. I woke up this morning refreshed and ready to start the week. Unfortunately for a lot of people, Monday is a common day to wake up disheartened from a weekend of over indulgence or starting the week ‘feeling fat’, vowing to do better next weekend. Unfortunately, diving into a new restrictive diet is unlikely to help or improve health in the long term. So if you woke up ‘feeling fat’ this morning, here are a few things you can do about it: 💛Stop dieting: Dieting and restriction leads to bingeing most, if not, all of the time. If you want to stop the bingeing, you need to stop the restriction. Trying to ‘control’ binge eating by rigidity and diet rules on a Monday will only make the weekend bingeing worse. 💛Shift your habits: Try and make simple steps to improve your health that doesn’t involve restriction. Maybe you need to focus on drinking more water? Or perhaps you want to increase your incidental movement and so aiming to get those daily 10k steps in, aim for more alcohol free days or to cook dinner at home more this week and cook enough for lunch the next day. Aim to increase your healthy habits without the focus on eating LESS or restriction. As a result, you will feel a lot better for it. Small sustainable steps work best 😊 💛Wear comfortable clothes: If you have had a big weekend celebrating with friends or have maybe over indulged a little too much, be kind to yourself. Pull out those stretchy pants and dress for comfort. Tearing tight clothes will not only be uncomfortable but will make you feel worse. If you want to look and feel good, wear clothes that actually fit. 💛Do an Instagram clear out: unfollow all those accounts that give you negative feelings. You know the ones. Many people follow those accounts for ‘inspiration’ but instead are just left feeling inadequate with their current lives or natural body shape.
Had the best morning yesterday spent at the @clevedonfarmersmarket collecting supplies & then home to cook the feast of all feasts with the @feelfreshnutrition crew! Great food and great chat = a happy little pack of nutritionists 💛💛
